Emotional Cheating!!! First I have to say I love your channel and your perspectives on these classic black films. It's nice to hear a film analysis that really goes deep in to culture, beliefs etc and how they are reflected in the characters and the movie itself. Keep going!!! On to emotional cheating, i think a big reason people end up in these situations, is because many of us don't have anyone to be open and honest with. We spend so much of our relationships (intimate mostly, but friendships & familial too) pretending to be someone we think the other person wants, hiding or masking our true feelings and then because we've created this big lie we can't be honest with our friends, fam, etc for fear they'll see that we've been lying. Because of that you now have to find someone else to share your true thoughts & feelings (which we feel shameful of) and you build a whole relationship with this new person where you don't have to keep up the facade you created. Low key Bernie & Wesley need a therapist to help them process all the shit they had going on, instead of basically her becoming a side for the night. When Bernie was talking with Gloria, she mentions that she's not looking for a new man bcuz she's tired and not ready to jump through hoops for them. The fact she was pretending her marriage was good, even though she wasn't happy and fulfilled is a major reason her marriage imploded. That always made me look at Bernie with a little side eye cuz like yall said, she knew he was cheating, she just didn't think he would leave. She's low key like Sheila (y did i get married), so comfortable with being uncomfortable and not really valuing herself and her own needs, that she was willing to be with a man who was obviously unhappy and not treating her the way she wanted. The only reason they got a divorce is cuz their husbands were willing to chose their own happiness over everything I don't think emotional cheating is a conscious choice people make 9 x out of 10, but misery loves company and ppl who are faking find and gravitate and connect with ppl on that same type of time.

To be honest, this was my main critique of Bernandine. Yes her anger towards her husband was completely justified but when she adopted the attitude of “Well this happened to me, so I don’t care if I put another woman through the same pain, even if it’s only a one night stand” she was wrong. Gloria tried to tell her that but Bernie brushed her off with the whole “I’m not like you” thing which hurt Gloria. But like a real friend, Gloria let that go and still communicated that Bernie was wrong for what she did. Gloria wanted a true partner as well but wasn’t going to sleep with someone else’s husband to make herself feel better.
